⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and the parking brake is engaged
- Turn the ignition to the ON position (turn key to position II, or press START button without pressing clutch/brake twice to reach ON mode)
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- Move the shift lever rearward to the N position (one position back from D, or forward from R)
- If the brake-light switch has failed and the shifter will not release: locate the shift lock override access on the center console near the shifter base
- Look for a small plastic cap or access panel on the left-front side of the shifter surround—it may be integrated into the console trim
- Remove the cap or pry the small cover panel carefully using a plastic trim tool or fingernail
- Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously moving the shifter to N
- Once in N, the override tool can be removed and the cap replaced
Shift-lock override location
Small access point on the left-front area of the shifter base or console trim—look for a removable cap near the shifter boot
With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery: the PDK shifter is electronically controlled and will not move without power. You must either jump-start the 12V battery (located in front trunk) or connect a portable jump pack to the jump-start posts under the front hood to provide enough power to cycle ignition ON and release the shifter. Once power is available, follow the normal procedure above.
