⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and parking brake is engaged.
- Locate the small rectangular shift lock override slot—it is on the left side of the shifter base, beneath a small plastic cover cap that may be labeled or unmarked.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver or the metal key blade to carefully pry off the override cover cap.
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously moving the shifter from Park.
- Shift into Neutral (center position) while maintaining pressure on the override release.
- If the vehicle has no electrical power, the override still functions mechanically—continue applying pressure and move the shifter to Neutral.
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be rolled or loaded onto a flatbed.

With zero electrical power
The shift lock override is mechanical and does not require battery power. Insert the tool into the override slot, press down, and shift to Neutral. The steering lock may engage with no power—do not attempt to steer; use a flatbed or dolly for all wheels.
