🚨 2002 Porsche 911 Turbo: Emergency Neutral

The 2002 911 Turbo (996 generation) came standard with a 6-speed manual transmission with a traditional floor-mounted shifter; Tiptronic automatic was optional.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. If equipped with manual transmission: Depress the clutch pedal fully (if no power, clutch is purely mechanical and will still function).
  2. Move the shifter to the Neutral position (center, between 3rd and 4th gear gates).
  3. Release the clutch pedal and ensure the parking brake is engaged or vehicle is chocked.
  4. The vehicle can now be rolled or loaded.
  5. If equipped with Tiptronic automatic: Locate the shift lock override slot near the shifter base on the center console, typically covered by a small plastic cap.
  6. Pry off the cap with a flat-blade screwdriver or key.
  7. Insert the screwdriver into the override slot and press down while moving the shifter from Park to Neutral.
  8. Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved.
Shift-lock override location
Manual transmission: none needed. Tiptronic automatic: near the shifter base on the center console, under a small plastic cap.
With zero electrical power
Manual transmission: clutch and shifter are fully mechanical; simply depress clutch and shift to Neutral. Tiptronic automatic: the shift lock override is mechanical—insert tool, press down, and shift to Neutral. Steering lock may engage with no power; use flatbed or wheel dollies.
