🚨 2004 Porsche 911 Turbo: Emergency Neutral

The 2004 911 Turbo with Tiptronic S has a traditional console-mounted automatic shifter with a gate pattern, featuring a shift-lock button on the side of the shifter handle.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure parking brake is firmly engaged and wheels are chocked
  2. Turn ignition to ON position (or ACC if battery has sufficient charge for accessories)
  3. Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
  4. Press the shift-lock release button on the left side of the shifter handle while pulling the shifter toward you to move from Park to Neutral
  5. If brake-light switch has failed, the shift-lock button may not release even with brake pressed
  6. For mechanical override with no power or failed switch: locate the small rectangular cover/slot on the left side of the shifter base console
  7. Use a small flathead screwdriver or key to press into the override slot while simultaneously pulling the shifter out of Park
  8. Once in Neutral, vehicle can be moved or loaded onto flatbed

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the mechanical shift-lock override slot on the left side of the shifter console must be used. Insert a rigid tool (screwdriver or key) into the override slot and press firmly while pulling the shifter out of Park. The override mechanically releases the shift-lock solenoid.
