⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure parking brake is firmly engaged and wheels are chocked
- Turn ignition to ON position (or ACC if battery has sufficient charge)
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- Press the shift-lock button on the side of the shifter handle and move shifter from Park to Neutral
- If brake-light switch has failed or battery is too weak for electronics, use the mechanical override
- Locate the small cover or slot on the left side of the center console near the shifter base
- Remove any cover cap if present, or locate the override access hole
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot
- Press down firmly on the override mechanism while pulling the shifter out of Park into Neutral
- Vehicle can now be moved or loaded

With zero electrical power
With no battery power, use the mechanical shift-lock override. The override slot is typically located on the left side of the center console near the shifter base. Insert a rigid tool into the slot and press down to manually release the shift-lock mechanism, then move shifter to Neutral. This works independently of electrical power.
