🚨 2005 Porsche 911 Turbo: Emergency Neutral

The 2005 911 Turbo (997 generation) with Tiptronic S features a console-mounted automatic shifter with electronic shift-lock and a release button integrated into the shifter handle.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure parking brake is firmly engaged and wheels are chocked
  2. Turn ignition to ON position (or ACC if battery has sufficient charge)
  3. Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
  4. Press the shift-lock button on the side of the shifter handle and move shifter from Park to Neutral
  5. If brake-light switch has failed or battery is too weak for electronics, use the mechanical override
  6. Locate the small cover or slot on the left side of the center console near the shifter base
  7. Remove any cover cap if present, or locate the override access hole
  8. Insert a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot
  9. Press down firmly on the override mechanism while pulling the shifter out of Park into Neutral
  10. Vehicle can now be moved or loaded
Shift-lock override location
Small slot or removable cover on the left side of the center console near the shifter base; override mechanism accessed with small tool
With zero electrical power
With no battery power, use the mechanical shift-lock override. The override slot is typically located on the left side of the center console near the shifter base. Insert a rigid tool into the slot and press down to manually release the shift-lock mechanism, then move shifter to Neutral. This works independently of electrical power.
