⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure parking brake is firmly engaged and wheels are chocked
- Turn ignition to ON position (do not need to start engine)
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- Press the shift-lock release button on the shifter and move from Park to Neutral
- If this fails due to dead battery or brake-light switch failure, use mechanical override
- Look for a small rectangular cover or access slot on the left side of the center console near the shifter base
- Pry off the cover cap if present using a trim tool or flathead screwdriver
- Insert a small screwdriver or key into the revealed override slot
- Press down into the override slot while simultaneously moving the shifter out of Park to Neutral
- Vehicle is now in Neutral and can be moved or loaded onto flatbed
Shift-lock override location
Small cover or slot on the left side of the center console near the base of the shifter; may require removing a small trim cap to access the override mechanism
With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the mechanical override must be used. Locate the override slot on the left side of the shifter console base (may be covered by a small cap). Insert a rigid tool and press down to mechanically disengage the shift-lock, then move shifter to Neutral. This bypasses all electrical systems.
