🚨 2008 Porsche 911 Turbo: Emergency Neutral

The 2008 911 Turbo (997.1) came with either Tiptronic S automatic or manual transmission; the Tiptronic features a console-mounted automatic shifter with electronic shift-lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure parking brake is firmly engaged and wheels are chocked
  2. Turn ignition to ON/ACC position if battery has any charge
  3. Press and hold the brake pedal
  4. Press the shift-lock button on the shifter handle and move from Park to Neutral
  5. If battery is dead or brake-light switch has failed, proceed with mechanical override
  6. Locate the shift-lock override access on the left side of the center console near the shifter base
  7. Remove the small cover cap if present (may need to pry gently with trim tool)
  8. Insert a small flathead screwdriver or key into the override slot
  9. Press firmly into the slot to depress the mechanical override while pulling shifter out of Park
  10. Move shifter to Neutral position
  11. Vehicle can now be moved or loaded
Shift-lock override location
Located on the left side of the center console near the base of the shifter; typically covered by a small removable cap that reveals the override slot
With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, use the mechanical shift-lock override. Find the override access (usually a small covered slot) on the left side of the console near the shifter. Remove any cover and insert a rigid tool into the slot, pressing down to release the mechanical lock. This allows the shifter to be moved to Neutral without any electrical power.
