⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure parking brake is firmly engaged and wheels are chocked
- Turn ignition to ON position (do not need to start engine)
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- The PDK shifter should unlock and can be moved rearward from Park through Reverse to Neutral
- If brake-light switch has failed or battery is too weak, use the mechanical override
- Locate the shift-lock override access on the left side of the center console near the shifter base
- Look for a small rectangular cover or cap - remove it if present using a trim tool
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or key into the override slot
- Press down firmly into the override mechanism while moving the shifter rearward out of Park
- Move through Reverse position to Neutral (or use shifter button if accessible to go directly to Neutral)
- Vehicle is now in Neutral and can be moved or loaded
Shift-lock override location
Small cover or slot on the left side of the center console at the base of the PDK shifter; may require removing a trim cap to access the mechanical override
With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, locate the mechanical shift-lock override on the left side of the console near the shifter base. Remove any cover cap and insert a rigid tool (small screwdriver) into the override slot. Press down firmly while moving the shifter rearward out of Park. The mechanical override works without any electrical power. Move shifter to Neutral position.
