⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition key to position II (ON) to provide power to the shift lock solenoid
- Locate the shift lock override - look for a small covered slot or access point near the base of the shifter on the driver's side
- If present, remove the small plastic cap covering the override access
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver, key blade, or similar tool into the override slot
- Press down or sideways (depending on mechanism design) while simultaneously moving the shift lever to Neutral
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be rolled or towed with rear wheels on the ground for short distances
Shift-lock override location
Near the base of the shifter assembly on the driver's side; check for a small plastic cap that can be pried off to access the mechanical override
With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, the shift lock solenoid will not release electrically. You MUST use the mechanical override. Additionally, the 996 has an electronic steering lock - with zero power, the steering may remain locked even if you get the transmission to Neutral. You may need to provide jump power or charge the battery minimally to unlock steering before the car can roll. For completely dead scenarios, flatbed towing is strongly recommended.
