- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground
- Turn the ignition to the ON position (or ACC if battery has minimal charge)
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- Press the shift lock release button on the side of the shifter (small button near the base)
- While holding the release button, move the shifter to N (neutral)
- If battery is completely dead, locate the shift lock override slot - typically a small covered slot near the shifter base on the center console
- Remove the small plastic cover using a flat tool or your fingernail
