⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground
- Turn the ignition to the ON position (or ACC if battery has minimal charge)
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- Press the shift lock release button on the side of the shifter lever
- While holding the release button, move the shifter to N (neutral)
- If battery is completely dead, locate the shift lock override slot near the shifter base
- The override slot is typically covered by a small plastic cap on the center console near the shifter surround
- Remove the plastic cover using a flat tool
- Insert the metal key blade or a small flathead screwdriver into the override slot and apply downward/inward pressure
- While holding pressure on the override, move the shifter to N
- Once in neutral, the vehicle can be rolled or loaded
Shift-lock override location
Small covered slot near the base of the shifter on the center console, typically on the right side or front of the shifter surround panel
With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, use the mechanical shift lock override. Remove the small plastic cap near the shifter base and insert the key blade or screwdriver into the slot to mechanically release the shifter lock. Note that this only releases the shifter mechanism - if the PDK transmission itself is electronically locked in a gear, the rear wheels may not roll freely and flatbed transport will be necessary. Do not attempt to tow with rear wheels on the ground if the transmission is locked in gear.
