⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is engaged and the vehicle is secure
- Turn the ignition to ON position (or ACC with minimal battery power)
- Press and hold the brake pedal
- Press the shift lock release button on the side of the shifter lever
- While holding the button, move the shifter to N (neutral)
- If the battery is completely dead, look for the shift lock override access point
- Find the small plastic cover on the center console near the shifter base
- Remove the cover carefully with a flat tool
- Insert the metal key blade or a small screwdriver into the override slot
- Apply pressure to release the lock while moving the shifter to N
Shift-lock override location
Small covered slot located on the center console near the base of the shifter, generally on the right or forward side of the shifter surround
With zero electrical power
With no electrical power, use the mechanical shift lock override by removing the small plastic cap near the shifter base and inserting the key blade or screwdriver to manually release the solenoid. This releases only the shifter lock - the Tiptronic transmission itself may remain locked. If wheels do not roll after engaging neutral, the vehicle must be transported on a flatbed. Do not drag or tow with drive wheels on the ground if transmission is locked.
