⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure parking brake is engaged and vehicle is on level ground
- Turn ignition to ON position (or ACC if battery is weak)
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- Press the shift lock release button located on the side of the shifter
- While holding the release button, move shifter to N (neutral)
- If battery is completely dead, locate the shift lock override access
- Find the small plastic cover on the center console near the base of the shifter
- Remove the plastic cover using a flat blade or fingernail
- Insert the metal key blade or small flathead screwdriver into the override slot
- Press down/in on the override mechanism while moving the shifter to N
Shift-lock override location
Small covered slot on the center console near the shifter base, typically located on the right side or front of the shifter surround trim
With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, you must use the mechanical shift lock override. Remove the small plastic access cover near the shifter base and insert the key blade or screwdriver to manually depress the shift lock release mechanism. This releases the shifter lock only - the Tiptronic transmission may still be hydraulically locked in park or gear. If the vehicle will not roll after shifting to neutral, it must be flatbedded. Never tow with drive wheels down if transmission is locked in gear.
