The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake firmly
- If the battery has ANY charge remaining, turn the ignition to ON position (do not start engine)
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- Move the shift lever to Neutral (center position, between Reverse and Drive)
- If the shift lever will not move from Park due to shift interlock failure, locate the small circular shift lock release cover on the center console directly behind and to the left of the shifter base
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver or the ignition key to pry off the shift lock release cover
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the exposed release slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pulling the shift lever toward you and moving it to Neutral
- With the vehicle in Neutral and parking brake released, the car can now be moved or loaded

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the PDK transmission will remain locked in Park. The mechanical shift lock override (described above) may still require minimal electrical function to disengage the parking pawl. If the override does not work with zero power, the vehicle must be towed with front wheels off the ground or on a flatbed. DO NOT attempt to tow with rear wheels off the ground as this will damage the PDK transmission.
