🚨 1992 Porsche 928 GTS: Emergency Neutral

The 1992 928 GTS uses a traditional floor-mounted console shifter with electronic shift interlock controlled by the brake pedal switch.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and wheels are chocked
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ON position (position II) if battery has any charge remaining
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot on the left side of the shifter base, covered by a small rectangular plastic cap
  4. Use a small flathead screwdriver or the ignition key to pry off the plastic cap
  5. Insert a small screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot and push down firmly
  6. While holding the override down, press the shifter button and move the shifter to Neutral
  7. If battery is completely dead and ignition cannot be turned on, the mechanical override alone should allow shifter movement when pressed

With zero electrical power
With zero power, the mechanical shift lock override still functions. The override slot mechanically releases the shift interlock mechanism independent of electrical power. If the steering lock is engaged, you may need to rock the steering wheel while turning the key to unlock it before the shifter override will work properly.
