The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and wheels are chocked
- Turn the ignition key to the ON position (position II) if battery has any charge remaining
- Locate the shift lock override access point near the shifter base—look for a small cover or slot on the left side of the shifter console trim
- Remove the small plastic cover if present using a small flathead screwdriver
- Insert a small screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot and push down or pull up (depending on mechanism design) to release the shift lock
- While holding the override, press the shifter button and move the shifter to Neutral
- If battery is completely dead, the mechanical override should still function to release the interlock
