The procedure
- Apply the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
- Turn the ignition key to the ON position (do not start engine) to release the steering lock and provide power to the shift interlock
- Press the brake pedal fully
- Press the button on the side of the shift lever and move to Neutral
- If shift lever will not move due to failed brake-light switch or interlock: locate the small plastic cap or access slot on the right side of the shifter base near the console trim
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or key to press down on the manual shift-lock override mechanism while pressing the shifter button
- Move shifter to Neutral while holding the override down
- Turn ignition OFF once in Neutral, keep parking brake engaged

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, the shift-lock override should still function mechanically. Access the override slot as described and manually press the release while manipulating the shifter button.
