⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Apply the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
- Turn the ignition key to the ON position (do not start engine) to release the steering lock and provide power to the shift interlock
- Press the brake pedal fully
- Press the button on the side of the shift lever and move to Neutral
- If shift lever will not move due to failed brake-light switch or interlock: locate the small plastic cap or access slot on the right side of the shifter base near the console trim
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or key to press down on the manual shift-lock override mechanism while pressing the shifter button
- Move shifter to Neutral while holding the override down
- Turn ignition OFF once in Neutral, keep parking brake engaged
Shift-lock override location
Small access slot or removable cap on the right side of the shifter base, near where the shifter meets the console; override release is directly beneath
With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, the mechanical shift-lock override should still function. Access the override slot and manually press the release while manipulating the shifter button. If the steering lock prevents turning the key to ON, you may need to jump-start the 12V battery briefly to unlock the steering column, then disconnect and use the manual override for shifting.
