🚨 2013 Porsche Cayenne GTS: Emergency Neutral

The 2013 Cayenne GTS (958 generation) uses a center console shift lever with 8-speed Tiptronic S automatic transmission and electronic shift interlock.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and set the parking brake firmly.
  2. Insert the key fob into the ignition slot (if equipped) or ensure the key fob is in the vehicle, then turn the ignition to ON/accessory position to provide electrical power to the shifter mechanism.
  3. Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.
  4. Press the shift lever release button on the side of the shifter and move the lever from Park to Neutral.
  5. If the shift interlock does not release with brake pedal pressed, locate the shift lock override access—look for a small covered slot or removable trim panel in the center console area near the shifter base, typically to the right side of the shifter.
  6. Remove the cover or small plastic cap using a flathead screwdriver or trim removal tool.
  7. Insert a flathead screwdriver or similar tool into the override mechanism and press/push while simultaneously pressing the shifter release button and moving the lever to Neutral.
  8. Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved or loaded onto a flatbed.
Shift-lock override location
Small covered access point in the center console near the shifter base, typically to the right side—consult owner's manual for precise location as 958-generation trim varies
With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the electronic shift interlock remains engaged. You must use the shift lock override: locate and remove the cover near the shifter base, insert a tool into the override mechanism, and press while moving the shifter to Neutral. The steering will be locked, so the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed—it cannot be safely towed with wheels down. Jump-starting the battery is the preferred method if possible.
