The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and set the parking brake firmly.
- Insert the key fob into the ignition slot (if equipped) or ensure the key fob is in the vehicle, then turn the ignition to ON/accessory position to provide electrical power to the shifter mechanism.
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.
- Press the shift lever release button on the side of the shifter and move the lever from Park to Neutral.
- If the shift interlock does not release with brake pedal pressed, locate the shift lock override access—look for a small covered slot or removable trim panel in the center console area near the shifter base, typically to the right side of the shifter.
- Remove the cover or small plastic cap using a flathead screwdriver or trim removal tool.
