⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake firmly.
- Turn the ignition to the ON position (or press the start button twice without pressing the brake pedal) to provide power to the shift interlock system.
- If the shift lock still will not release with ignition power, locate the shift lock override slot - it is a small rectangular opening with a cover cap located on the left side of the shifter base in the center console.
- Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to pry off the cover cap.
- Insert a key or small screwdriver into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pressing the shifter button and moving the shifter to neutral.
- Keep the override depressed until the shifter is fully in neutral position.

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, you must use the mechanical shift lock override. The override slot is accessible without any battery power - simply remove the cap, insert a tool into the slot, press down firmly, and shift to neutral while holding the override down. The shifter button must still be pressed during this process.
