The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake firmly (mechanical pull handle between seats).
- Turn the ignition to the ON position if possible (do not need to start engine). If battery is completely dead, you will need to jump 12V power to access electrical unlock.
- With brake pedal depressed and ignition on, press the shift lock button on the left side of the gear selector lever and move to Neutral.
- If no electrical power is available: Locate the shift lock override access - on the center console, look for a small rectangular cap/cover immediately forward and to the left of the gear selector base (driver's side).
- Remove the override cap by prying gently with a flathead screwdriver or trim tool.
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pulling the gear selector toward you and moving it to Neutral position.
- The shift lock override mechanically releases the pawl; you may need to apply steady pressure while manipulating the selector.

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, you must use the mechanical shift lock override slot. Consider jump-starting the 12V battery from the under-hood jump post (driver's side firewall area) to restore electrical function for easier shifting. The electronic parking brake will remain engaged without power - it may need to be manually released at the rear calipers if the vehicle must roll.
