🚨 2012 Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid: Emergency Neutral

The 2012 Cayenne S Hybrid uses a traditional console-mounted shift lever with electronic shift interlock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake firmly
  2. Turn the ignition to the ON position (press start button without brake pedal, or use emergency key access if battery is completely dead)
  3. Locate the shift lock release cover on the center console—it's a small rectangular cap directly forward and to the left of the shift lever base
  4. Use a small flathead screwdriver or the emergency key blade to carefully pry off the shift lock release cover
  5. Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pulling the shift lever toward you and moving it to Neutral
  6. If moving to a flatbed, keep pressure on the override while shifting; the vehicle can now roll freely

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the shift interlock remains mechanical. Access the override slot per the steps above. You may need to use the emergency key to unlock the steering column (key slot typically under steering column cover on the left side). The shift override works without power, but steering will be locked and extremely heavy without power steering assist.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: This is a hybrid vehicle with high-voltage components. Before towing, ensure the hybrid system is completely powered down. Porsche strongly recommends flatbed-only transport for hybrid Cayennes to prevent damage to the electric motor and hybrid drivetrain. Do NOT tow with any wheels on the ground for extended distances—the electric motor is integrated into the transmission and can be damaged by unpowered rotation.
