🚨 2003 Porsche Cayenne S: Emergency Neutral

The 2003 Cayenne S (first generation, Type 955) uses a traditional center console-mounted automatic transmission lever with cable-actuated shift lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply wheel chocks if available.
  2. Attempt to gain electrical power: open the hood and connect a jump starter or donor vehicle to the battery (located on the right side of engine bay).
  3. If power is restored, press the brake pedal, turn the key to ON or ACC position, then shift to Neutral normally.
  4. If no power is available or brake-light switch has failed, locate the shift lock override cover on the center console near the shifter.
  5. The override slot is a small rectangular cover located directly forward (toward the dashboard) of the shifter base—it may be black or match the console trim.
  6. Use the emergency key blade or a small flathead screwdriver to pry off the cover.
  7. Insert the key or screwdriver into the slot and press down while simultaneously moving the shift lever from Park to Neutral.
  8. With the shifter in Neutral and parking brake released, the vehicle can be pushed or loaded.

With zero electrical power
The 2003 Cayenne has a conventional hydraulic parking brake, not electronic. Release the parking brake manually by pulling and releasing the parking brake lever. The shift lock override works with zero electrical power as it mechanically releases the shifter cable lock.
