⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply wheel chocks if available.
- Attempt to restore electrical power: open the hood and connect a jump starter or donor vehicle to the battery terminals (positive terminal under red cover, negative ground point marked on body).
- If power is restored, press the brake pedal, turn ignition to ON position (or press start button without starting engine), then shift to Neutral normally.
- If power cannot be restored, locate the shift lock override access point on the center console near the shifter base.
- Look for a small rectangular or circular cover on the left side or forward area of the shifter housing—it may require prying with the emergency key blade.
- Remove the cover to expose the override slot.
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or the emergency key blade into the slot and press firmly while pulling the shifter toward Neutral.
- The mechanical override releases the shift lock, allowing movement to Neutral.
- Note that the electronic parking brake will remain engaged with no power—vehicle must be loaded onto flatbed with wheel dollies or winch.
Shift-lock override location
Small cover on or near the left side of the shifter base on the center console (exact position may vary slightly by model year/trim)
With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the electronic parking brake (EPB) cannot be released and will remain locked on the rear wheels. Use the shift lock override to get to Neutral, but the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed with the rear wheels on dollies or dragged onto the bed with a winch. Do not attempt to tow with any wheels on the ground.
