🚨 2005 Porsche Cayenne Turbo: Emergency Neutral

The 2005 Cayenne Turbo (955 generation) features a traditional center-console automatic transmission selector lever with a mechanical shift-lock solenoid.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake firmly (or chock all wheels if parking brake is inoperative).
  2. Turn the ignition key to position II (ON) if any battery power remains.
  3. Firmly press and hold the brake pedal.
  4. Locate the shift-lock override release: it is a small covered slot or button on the center console, typically found on the left side of the shifter base or just forward of the shifter (sometimes under a small rubber plug or trim cap).
  5. Remove the cover cap by prying gently with a flat-blade screwdriver or your fingernail.
  6. Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot and press down (or press the override button if it's a button type) while simultaneously moving the shifter out of Park into Neutral.
  7. If you have absolutely no electrical power, you may still be able to use the mechanical override, but you will need to turn the key to position II—if the battery is completely dead, you must jump-start the vehicle first to power the ignition circuit and unlock the steering lock.
Shift-lock override location
Small covered slot or button on the left side of the shifter base or just forward of the shifter, underneath a rubber plug or trim cap.
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the ignition cannot be turned on and the steering lock remains engaged. You MUST jump-start the vehicle using the battery in the rear cargo area (under the cargo floor on the left side) or via the underhood jump-start posts if equipped. Once you have power to turn the ignition to ON, the mechanical shift-lock override will function as described above.
