The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition key to position II (ignition on) if battery has any charge remaining
- Locate the shift lock override slot: it is a small covered opening on the left side of the shifter base near the center console
- Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to pry off the small plastic cover over the override slot
- Insert the screwdriver or key blade into the override slot and push down firmly while simultaneously pulling the shifter toward you from Park
- Move the shifter to Neutral while maintaining pressure on the override
- If the shifter will not release, verify the brake pedal is depressed (shift interlock is brake-dependent even with override on some units)
