🚨 2008 Porsche Cayenne Turbo: Emergency Neutral

The 2008 Cayenne Turbo (955 generation) uses a center console-mounted automatic transmission lever with electronic shift interlock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake firmly
  2. Turn the ignition key to position II (ignition on) if battery has any charge remaining
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot: it is a small covered opening on the left side of the shifter base near the center console
  4. Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to pry off the small plastic cover over the override slot
  5. Insert the screwdriver or key blade into the override slot and push down firmly while simultaneously pulling the shifter toward you from Park
  6. Move the shifter to Neutral while maintaining pressure on the override
  7. If the shifter will not release, verify the brake pedal is depressed (shift interlock is brake-dependent even with override on some units)

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the shift lock override should still function mechanically. If the steering lock is engaged, you may need to jump-start the vehicle briefly to release the steering column lock before the vehicle can roll freely. The override bypasses only the shift interlock, not the steering lock system.
