The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition to the ON position (engine does not need to run) to provide power to the shifter release mechanism
- Locate the small rectangular shift-lock override cap on the left side of the shifter base, near the driver's side of the center console
- Use a small flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the override cap
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the exposed override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, press the brake pedal and move the shifter to Neutral
- If the vehicle must be moved without power, keep the override pressed while manually shifting to Neutral without brake pedal input

With no 12V power, the override slot can still be accessed. Insert a tool into the override slot and press down firmly while moving the shifter to Neutral. The shifter may require more force without power assistance. If the steering lock is engaged, it will not release without power—the vehicle must be towed with front wheels off the ground or on a flatbed.
