⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition to the ON position if battery power is available (do not start engine)
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- Locate the shift lock override slot—it is a small rectangular opening with a cover cap located on the left side of the shifter base in the center console
- Use a flat-head screwdriver or the metal key blade to pry off the small cover cap
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pulling the shifter toward you to move it to Neutral
- If the ignition will not turn on due to dead battery, you must use the mechanical override while having an assistant manually release the parking brake or proceed directly to flatbed loading

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the ignition will not activate and the electronic parking brake cannot be released electrically. You must use the shift lock override to get the shifter to Neutral, but the EPB will remain engaged. For flatbed loading, the rear wheels must be lifted, or you must manually release the EPB using the emergency release procedure in the owner's manual (requires removing rear seat cushion and accessing EPB actuators). Do not attempt to tow with rear wheels on the ground.
