The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition to ON position (or press start button without brake pedal) if battery has any charge
- Locate the shift lock override slot: it is a small rectangular opening with a cover cap on the left side of the shifter base, toward the driver
- Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to pry off the small plastic cover cap
- Insert the screwdriver or key blade into the exposed override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, move the shifter from Park to Neutral
- If the ignition is on, the shift position will display on the instrument cluster; if completely dead, you will feel mechanical resistance release
- Keep brake applied during the shift, then verify the vehicle is in Neutral before releasing the parking brake

With a completely dead battery, the shift lock override will still function mechanically. You will NOT have power steering or power brakes. The PDK transmission's park pawl releases mechanically when you use the override. You may need to rock the vehicle slightly if the park pawl is under tension. The steering lock may remain engaged; you may need to apply 12V power (jump pack or jumper cables) momentarily to release the steering lock before the vehicle can roll freely.
