🚨 2017 Porsche Panamera 4S: Emergency Neutral
The 2017 Panamera 4S uses a center console-mounted short-throw automatic shifter lever with electronic shift interlock (first year of 971 generation, 2017-2024).

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition to ON position (press start button without brake pedal) if battery has any charge
- Locate the shift lock override: on the 971 generation, there is a small cover cap on the left side of the shifter surround near the base
- Use the metal key blade or a small flathead screwdriver to carefully pry off the cover cap
- Insert the tool into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override depressed, move the shifter rearward from Park through Reverse to Neutral
- If ignition is on, verify Neutral on the instrument cluster display; if dead, you will feel the shifter release mechanically
- The vehicle is now in Neutral and can roll; maintain brake pressure until ready to move

With zero electrical power
With zero battery power, the mechanical shift lock override will still release the shifter. However, you will have no power steering or power brakes. The electronic parking brake may not release without power—if the EPB is stuck on, you may need to apply 12V power via jump pack or jumper cables to release it. The steering column lock may also remain engaged without power; momentary 12V may be needed to unlock steering before the vehicle can be moved.
