⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and set the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition to ON (or press start button without brake pedal) if the battery has any remaining charge
- Locate the shift lock override slot: it is on the left side of the shifter base, covered by a small rectangular plastic cap
- Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to carefully pry off the plastic cover cap
- Insert the tool into the override slot and press down firmly to release the shift lock mechanism
- While holding the override down, move the shifter from Park to Neutral
- If power is available, confirm Neutral on the instrument cluster; if battery is dead, you will feel the mechanical release
- Maintain brake pressure during the shift; once in Neutral, the vehicle can roll freely

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, the shift lock override operates mechanically and does not require electrical power to release the transmission from Park. However, you will have no power steering or power brakes. The steering column lock may remain engaged without power; you may need to connect a jump pack or jumper cables briefly to unlock the steering column. If the park pawl is under load, gently rocking the vehicle while pressing the override may help release it.
