The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition to ON position (press start button without brake pedal) if battery has any charge remaining
- Locate the shift lock override slot on the left side of the shifter base, covered by a small plastic cap
- Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to pry off the cover cap
- Insert the tool into the override slot and press down firmly to mechanically release the shift lock
- While holding the override depressed, move the shifter from Park to Neutral
- If ignition is on, verify Neutral is displayed on the instrument cluster; if battery is dead, confirm by feel and attempting to roll
- Keep brake applied during the shift; vehicle can roll once in Neutral

With zero electrical power
With zero battery power, the mechanical shift lock override will release the shifter without electricity. You will have no power steering or power brakes, making the vehicle difficult to maneuver. The steering column lock may remain engaged; applying 12V power momentarily with a jump pack or jumper cables may be necessary to release the steering lock. If the park pawl is under tension (vehicle on an incline), gently rocking the vehicle while using the override can help release it.
