🚨 2023 Porsche Panamera Turbo S: Emergency Neutral
The 2023 Panamera (971 generation) uses a compact console-mounted electronic shifter lever with shift-by-wire technology and electronic parking brake integration.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure wheels are chocked securely - the electronic parking brake may not release without power.
- Attempt to turn the ignition to ON position or insert key fob into the dashboard slot if battery has any residual charge.
- Locate the shift lock override access - look for a small covered slot or panel at the base of the shifter console, typically on the left or right side near where the shifter meets the center console.
- Remove the small plastic cover by prying gently with a trim tool or small flathead screwdriver.
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot and push or press firmly (direction may be downward or forward depending on exact mechanism).
- While holding the override engaged, attempt to move the shifter to Neutral position.
- If shifter remains locked, ensure the ignition is in the correct position and try rocking the steering wheel slightly while holding the override.
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be rolled, but the electronic parking brake will remain engaged without power - the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed with wheels off the ground or the parking brake manually released (requires access to rear brake calipers).
Shift-lock override location
Small covered slot at the base of the shifter console, location varies but typically on the side of the shifter base - consult owner's manual if not immediately visible
With zero electrical power
The 971 Panamera is heavily electronic. With zero power, the shift-by-wire system and electronic parking brake both fail locked. Priority is getting minimal power: use a jump pack or donor vehicle to provide at least enough 12V to activate the shifter electronics. If absolutely no power is available, the shift override may work mechanically, but the electronic parking brake will NOT release - flatbed towing with all wheels off ground is required. Do not attempt to drag the vehicle with electronic parking brake engaged.
