⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake firmly (requires electrical power; if no power, chock all wheels securely)
- Turn the ignition to the ON position (do not need to start the engine, but the ignition must supply power to unlock the shifter)
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- Locate the small rectangular shift lock override cover on the left side of the shifter base, just forward of the shifter lever itself
- Use a small flat-blade screwdriver or trim tool to carefully pry off the override cover
- Insert the screwdriver or a key into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pulling the shifter back toward N (Neutral)
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be rolled or towed (PDK transmission is tow-safe in Neutral for short distances at low speeds)
- For flatbed transport, Neutral is acceptable; for long-distance towing, consult the owner's manual regarding PDK towing limits
Shift-lock override location
Small rectangular cover on the left side of the shifter base, directly forward of the shifter lever; the override slot is underneath this cover.
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the shifter electronic lock cannot be released and the parking brake cannot be disengaged electrically. You must jump-start the 12V battery (located in the front trunk) to provide enough power to turn ignition ON and unlock the shifter. The override slot still requires ignition power to function. If jump-starting is impossible, the vehicle must be dragged onto a flatbed with wheels locked—consult a professional.
