The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply wheel chocks before attempting any procedure.
- The 12V battery must have at least minimal charge to shift to neutral electronically—if completely dead, the vehicle cannot be shifted conventionally and must be towed on a flatbed with wheels free-rolling.
- If the 12V battery has some charge: Turn the ignition to ON by pressing the brake pedal and pushing the START button (engine won't start without high-voltage system, but 12V accessories will power up).
- Push the shifter stalk forward (away from you) briefly to select neutral—the stalk will return to center and the instrument cluster will display 'N'.
- If the electronic shifter is non-responsive due to a failed brake-light switch or shift interlock: Locate the shift-lock override access—on Taycan models this is typically a small cap or cover near the base of the shifter stalk on the column shroud.
- Use a small flat-blade screwdriver or the metal key blade to pry off the override cap.
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press/hold while pushing the shifter stalk forward to neutral.
- If moving the vehicle onto a flatbed, ensure the Taycan is in tow mode: Access the center touchscreen, go to Vehicle menu > Towing, and activate 'Transport Mode'—this releases the parking brake electronically and allows wheels to roll freely.
