🚨 2017 Ram 2500: Emergency Neutral

The 2017 Ram 2500 uses a traditional column-mounted or console-mounted electronic shift lever depending on trim level, with both featuring a shift lock override.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly set and the vehicle is on level ground
  2. Turn the ignition to the ACC or ON position if battery power is available (this may allow normal shifting if only the brake switch has failed)
  3. If the shifter will not release from Park, locate the shift lock override slot
  4. For console shifters: Look for a small plastic cap or rubber plug near the base of the shifter on the left side or front face of the shifter housing
  5. For column shifters: Look for a small access hole or cap on the left side of the steering column shroud near the shifter stalk
  6. Remove the cap using a small flathead screwdriver or pry tool
  7. Insert a small screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot while simultaneously moving the shifter from Park to Neutral
  8. Keep the tool pressed in while shifting - you should feel the mechanical lock release
  9. Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be pushed or towed (if no power, steering will be locked and very difficult to turn)
Shift-lock override location
Console shifters have the override slot under a cap on the left side or front of the shifter base; column shifters have it on the left side of the steering column near the shifter stalk
With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, you will need to use the mechanical shift lock override as described above. The steering wheel will remain locked, making steering extremely difficult - a flatbed or tow dolly for the front wheels is strongly recommended. You cannot access normal shifter functions without any 12V power.
