🚨 2016 Ram ProMaster: Emergency Neutral

The 2016 ProMaster uses a column-mounted electronic shifter (rotary dial on some models) or console-mounted lever depending on trim; the 6-speed automatic requires electronic control for normal shifting.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and parking brake is set
  2. Turn the ignition key to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
  3. If the shifter is electronic and functional, press the brake pedal firmly and shift to neutral normally
  4. If the shifter will not move due to shift lock failure, locate the shift lock override - on console shifters, look for a small plastic cap or cover near the base of the shifter on the right side
  5. Use a small flathead screwdriver or key to pry off the override cap
  6. Insert the screwdriver into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pressing the shift release button and moving the shifter to N
  7. If the battery is completely dead and the electronic shifter is non-responsive, you may need to access the transmission manually - this requires raising the vehicle and locating the manual shift lever on the transmission itself
  8. Once in neutral, verify the shifter indicator shows N before attempting to move the vehicle
Shift-lock override location
Small covered slot near the shifter base on console models; column rotary shifters may require dealer-level electronic override
With zero electrical power
With zero power, the electronic shifter will not function. If the vehicle must be moved with no power, raise the vehicle safely and locate the transmission shift linkage underneath - there is a manual release lever on the driver's side of the transmission case that can be moved to place the transmission in neutral. This requires working under the vehicle. Alternatively, use dollies under the drive wheels for flatbed loading.
