⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly applied and the vehicle is on level ground or properly chocked.
- Turn the ignition to the ON position if battery power is available (this may allow normal shifting if only the brake switch has failed).
- If the shifter remains locked, locate the shift lock override access - it is a small rectangular cap/cover on the left side of the shifter base, near the driver's side of the console.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the shift lock override cover.
- With the cover removed, press and hold the shift lock override button/tab inside the slot while simultaneously pressing the shifter button and moving the shifter to Neutral.
- If moving the vehicle with no battery power, you must use the manual override method as the electronic shifter will not function without 12V power.
- Once in Neutral, keep the parking brake applied or use wheel chocks before releasing the brake pedal.

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, the shift lock override is your only option. The override is purely mechanical and does not require electrical power. Insert the tool into the override slot and press the release while manipulating the shifter to Neutral. The steering will be locked and power brakes will not function, so the vehicle must be pushed or winched onto a flatbed.
