The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and parking brake is firmly engaged
- Turn the ignition to the ON/ACC position (second click before engine start) - this provides power to the shift interlock
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- Press the button on the side of the shift lever and move it to the N (Neutral) position
- If the shifter will not move due to a failed brake light switch or electrical issue, locate the shift lock override
- Look for a small rectangular cap or cover near the base of the shifter, typically on the right side or front of the shifter housing
- Pry up the cap carefully with a flathead screwdriver or your fingernail
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver, the vehicle key, or a similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, press the shifter button and move the lever to Neutral
- The shifter should now move freely into N position
Shift-lock override location
Located near the base of the console shifter assembly, typically under a small removable plastic cap on the right or front side of the shifter housing - look for a small rectangular cover approximately 1cm x 2cm
With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position (this is mechanical and does not require battery power). The shift lock override mechanism is mechanical and does not require electrical power to operate. Use the override slot procedure described above. If the key will not turn due to steering lock, try wiggling the steering wheel while turning the key. Once in neutral, the vehicle can be pushed or rolled onto a flatbed.
