🚨 2019 Renault Captur: Emergency Neutral

The 2019 Captur uses a conventional console-mounted automatic shifter with electronic shift lock tied to the brake pedal and ignition.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground
  2. Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has sufficient charge (key fob must be present)
  3. Locate the shift lock override: a small covered slot near the base of the shifter console, typically on the left or right side of the shifter base
  4. Remove the small plastic cap covering the override slot using a flathead screwdriver or your fingernail
  5. Insert a flathead screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly
  6. While holding the override down, move the shifter from Park to Neutral without pressing the brake pedal
  7. Remove the tool and replace the cap
  8. Vehicle can now be moved or towed with drive wheels on the ground (in Neutral, maximum 50 km for short distances)
Shift-lock override location
Small covered slot near the shifter base on the center console, typically to the left or right side of the shifter mechanism itself
With zero electrical power
If battery is completely dead and ignition cannot be activated, the shift lock override slot can still be accessed and used mechanically without any electrical power. The override is a purely mechanical release that bypasses the electronic shift interlock.
