🚨 2020 Renault Captur: Emergency Neutral
The 2020 Captur (second generation) uses a console-mounted automatic shifter; the E-Tech hybrid variant features an electronic shifter with gear-by-wire technology.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground
- For hybrid models: attempt to power on the vehicle with the START button (brake pedal pressed, key fob present) to enable normal shifting
- If ignition cannot be activated, locate the shift lock override: look for a small covered slot on the center console near the shifter base
- Remove the plastic cap covering the override slot using a flathead screwdriver or trim tool
- Insert a flathead screwdriver or key into the slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, move the shifter to Neutral position
- Remove the tool and replace the cap
- For hybrid models with complete electrical failure: if the electronic shifter is non-responsive even with override, vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed with all wheels off the ground
Shift-lock override location
Small covered slot on the center console near the shifter base, typically adjacent to the shifter mechanism on the left or right side
With zero electrical power
With no electrical power, the mechanical shift lock override should still function on conventional automatic versions. For E-Tech hybrid models with electronic shifters, the override may not fully disengage the transmission park pawl if the electronic system is completely dead—in this case, flatbed towing is required.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
HYBRID WARNING: The E-Tech plug-in hybrid Captur must be towed on a flatbed with all four wheels off the ground. The electric motors are permanently connected to the drive wheels and cannot be disconnected. Towing with wheels on the ground will cause severe damage to the hybrid system. Never tow a hybrid Captur with drive wheels touching the road surface.
