⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Apply the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels.
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery power is available.
- Locate the shift lock override slot - it is a small rectangular cover directly in front of the shift lever base on the console.
- Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to pry off the small plastic cover.
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the exposed override slot and press down firmly.
- While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if power available) and move the shifter to Neutral.
- If no power is available, continue holding the override down and manually move the shifter to Neutral - it may require moderate force.

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, you cannot turn the ignition to unlock the steering. After accessing the shift lock override and moving to Neutral, the vehicle can only be rolled if the steering wheel happens to be straight. If steering is locked, you must jump-start the 12V battery or use a battery pack to power the ignition before attempting to move the vehicle.
