⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the 12V battery has at least some charge - hybrids need minimal power for shifter electronics.
- Press the brake pedal and attempt to start the vehicle or turn ignition to ON.
- If the hybrid system powers up even partially, press the electronic parking brake button to release it, then shift to Neutral normally.
- If the shifter remains locked, locate the shift lock override - look for a small cover near the base of the shifter on the console.
- Pry off the cover with a flathead screwdriver and insert the tool into the override slot.
- Press down on the override while moving the shifter to Neutral.
- For complete 12V failure: you may need to jump-start the 12V battery to energize the shifter electronics before any movement is possible.

With zero electrical power
The E-Tech hybrid requires 12V power to release the electronic parking brake and operate the shift-by-wire system. With zero 12V power, the shift lock override may not fully disengage the transmission. Jump-starting the 12V battery is strongly recommended. The high-voltage hybrid battery does not help if the 12V system is dead.
