🚨 2026 Renault Megane: Emergency Neutral

The 2026 Renault Megane gas automatic uses a traditional console-mounted shift lever with electronic shift lock.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake firmly
  2. Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot - typically a small covered slot near the base of the shifter console
  4. Remove the rubber mat or trim panel around the shifter base to access the override slot
  5. Insert a small flathead screwdriver or key into the override slot
  6. Press down firmly on the override while simultaneously pressing the brake pedal (if power available) and moving the shifter to Neutral
  7. If successful, the shifter will release and can be moved to N
  8. Keep the override depressed until the shifter is fully in Neutral position
Shift-lock override location
Small covered slot near the shifter base, typically on the right side or front of the console surround; may require removing a rubber mat or small trim piece
With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the shift lock override is mechanical and should still function. You may need to manually unlock the steering column first. If the shifter remains locked, the vehicle may need to be placed in neutral by accessing the transmission directly from underneath (requires professional assistance) or loaded onto flatbed with wheels free.
