🚨 2024 Renault R5 E-Tech: Emergency Neutral

The 2024 Renault R5 E-Tech uses an electronic center console-mounted shifter (likely monostable or push-button type) with P-R-N-D selections for the single-speed EV transmission.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and properly chocked - the electronic parking brake will be engaged and cannot be released without 12V power
  2. Press the START button with the key card present to attempt powering on the vehicle
  3. If the vehicle powers to Ready mode or accessory mode, press and hold the brake pedal, then select Neutral using the shifter - verify 'N' appears on the digital display
  4. If completely dead with no 12V power, locate the mechanical shift-lock override: look for a small cover cap on or near the shifter assembly on the center console
  5. Remove the cover cap (may require a trim tool or small flat-blade screwdriver)
  6. Insert a screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot and press down while attempting to move the shifter to Neutral
  7. Even with the shifter in Neutral, the electronic parking brake remains engaged without power
  8. The vehicle MUST be loaded onto a flatbed truck - do NOT tow with any wheels on the ground
Shift-lock override location
Small cover cap on or near the shifter assembly on the center console - exact location should be verified in the owner's manual as this is a new model platform
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the electronic parking brake CANNOT be mechanically released on this EV. The shift-lock override only permits shifting to Neutral but all wheels remain locked. The 12V battery location should be identified (typically under hood or in trunk area) for potential jump-starting to restore enough power to release the parking brake. Without 12V power restoration, only flatbed transport is possible.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: The R5 E-Tech is a pure battery electric vehicle with an electronic parking brake that is impossible to release without 12V electrical power. Even if you successfully shift to Neutral using the override, the parking brake keeps all wheels locked. FLATBED TOW ONLY - never attempt to tow with wheels on the ground. Damage to the electric motor and drivetrain will occur. Jump-starting the 12V system is the only way to release the parking brake for rolling movement.
