The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
- Locate the shift lock override slot on the left side of the shifter base, covered by a small rectangular cap
- Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to pry off the override cap
- Insert the key or screwdriver into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, press the shifter button and move the shifter to Neutral
- If the vehicle has no power and the steering lock is engaged, you may need to rock the steering wheel while turning the key to release the steering column lock
