The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if 12V power is available
- Press the brake pedal and move the shifter from Park to Neutral normally
- If the shifter is locked and won't move, locate the shift-lock override slot
- The override is typically covered by a small removable cap or cover near the base of the shifter on the right side or front
- Use a flathead screwdriver or the emergency key to pry off the cap
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down while simultaneously moving the shifter to Neutral
- If successful, the vehicle can now roll freely in Neutral
