🚨 2017 Renault Zoe: Emergency Neutral

The 2017 Zoe uses a rotary gear selector dial on the center console that rotates to select Drive, Neutral, Reverse, and Park positions.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly applied
  2. If possible, turn the ignition to ON position (even with low 12V battery, the system may respond momentarily)
  3. With ignition on, simply rotate the gear selector dial to the Neutral position - the shift lock is electronic but may release with minimal power
  4. If the 12V battery is completely dead and the rotary selector will not respond, you must use the mechanical shift lock override
  5. Locate the shift lock override access - look for a small covered slot or panel near the base of the rotary selector
  6. Remove the cover carefully with a flat tool
  7. Insert a small screwdriver or key into the override mechanism and manipulate while attempting to rotate the selector to Neutral
  8. Once in Neutral, the parking brake electronic release may not work - be prepared to manually release the parking brake if it is electrically controlled
Shift-lock override location
Small covered access point near the base of the rotary gear selector on the center console, though exact location varies and may require careful inspection around the selector base
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the rotary selector is electrically locked. The mechanical override near the selector base must be accessed. Jump-starting the 12V system even briefly may be easier to unlock the selector. The electric parking brake may also remain engaged without power - manual release may be required (check owner's manual for EPB emergency release procedure).
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
The Zoe has NO NEUTRAL COASTING capability under its own power when the high-voltage system is active. For flatbed towing, the vehicle MUST be loaded with all wheels off the ground or on dollies. Do not tow with any wheels on the pavement for any distance, as the motor acts as a generator and can damage the electrical system. Neutral is only for moving the vehicle short distances manually or positioning on a flatbed.
