The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly applied
- If possible, turn the ignition to ON position (even with low 12V battery, the system may respond momentarily)
- With ignition on, simply rotate the gear selector dial to the Neutral position - the shift lock is electronic but may release with minimal power
- If the 12V battery is completely dead and the rotary selector will not respond, you must use the mechanical shift lock override
- Locate the shift lock override access - look for a small covered slot or panel near the base of the rotary selector
- Remove the cover carefully with a flat tool
- Insert a small screwdriver or key into the override mechanism and manipulate while attempting to rotate the selector to Neutral
- Once in Neutral, the parking brake electronic release may not work - be prepared to manually release the parking brake if it is electrically controlled
