The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is applied
- Turn the ignition to ON position if the 12V battery has any remaining charge
- Rotate the gear selector dial to the Neutral position
- If the 12V battery is completely dead and the selector is locked, look for a mechanical shift lock override
- Inspect around the base of the rotary selector for a small covered slot or access panel
- Remove any cover and insert a small tool (screwdriver or key) into the override slot
- Apply pressure to the override mechanism while attempting to rotate the selector to Neutral
- Note that the electric parking brake may also be locked and require jump-starting or manual release at the rear brake calipers
