🚨 2024 Rivian EDV 500: Emergency Neutral

The 2024 Rivian EDV-500 commercial van uses an electronic monostable gear selector on the center console that returns to center after each input.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and wheel chocks are in place
  2. Press the brake pedal and attempt to power on the vehicle using the START button
  3. If 12V power is available, press the gear selector forward or pull backward to N (Neutral) position; the selector will return to center
  4. Confirm Neutral is engaged by checking the instrument cluster display
  5. If the selector is locked due to a failed brake-light switch, look for a shift-lock override slot near the base of the gear selector on the console
  6. Remove any trim cap covering the override slot using a flathead screwdriver
  7. Insert the physical key or a small screwdriver into the override slot and press down while moving the selector to N
  8. If 12V power is completely dead, you must jump-start the 12V battery to release the electronic parking brake and engage neutral
Shift-lock override location
Near the base of the center console gear selector; exact location requires inspection as Rivian commercial vehicle documentation is limited (check for a small cap or slot on the right or front side of the selector housing)
With zero electrical power
The EDV-500 requires 12V power to release the electronic parking brake and operate the electronic shifter. With zero power, you must jump-start the 12V system. Once minimal power is restored, you can shift to neutral. The electronic parking brake has no manual release cable in this commercial EV platform.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
FLATBED TOW ONLY. Do NOT tow with any wheels on the ground. The EDV-500 is an all-wheel-drive electric vehicle with motors at both axles. Towing with wheels down will generate voltage and cause severe damage to the drive system. Activate Transport Mode if possible: with vehicle powered on and in Neutral, access the vehicle settings menu on the center display and select Transport Mode. This disconnects the motors electrically for a limited towing duration.
